
Thomas C. McConnell is a Managing Director investing
in medical technology companies. Tom is a venture capital
veteran of over 25 years who has demonstrated a solid track
record of investment success and a personal commitment to
the boards and organizations on which he has served. Tom was
named to the Forbes Midas List in 2007 in recognition of liquidity
realized between 2002 and 2006.
Prior to joining Vanguard, Tom was a General Partner at New
Enterprise Associates (NEA). He spent the first 14 years of
his venture capital career investing in medical device and
biopharmaceutical companies. Twenty of the healthcare companies
in which he invested went public and nine were acquired while
private. In 1998 he was recognized by VentureOne as one of
the top two venture investors in the medical device sector
based on the market value of companies where he held a board
seat. During his last five years at NEA, he invested in infrastructure
technologies such as communications equipment, optical components,
networking semiconductors and software.
During his career, McConnell also has played
a leadership role in the venture capital industry. He served
as Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA)
in 2001-02 and as President of the Western Association of
Venture Capitalists (WAVC) in 1995-96. Before becoming a venture
capitalist in 1985, McConnell was a product manager at Apple
Computer and a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.
He received an A.B. in Engineering Science, Summa Cum Laude,
from Dartmouth College and an MBA with honors from the Stanford
University Graduate School of Business.
